Dobermans come in 4 colors

Dobermans come in four colors and albino.

Besides the two common color's seen in the Doberman which are Black & Rust and Red & Rust. There are two dilute colors which are Blue & Rust and Fawn or Isabella & Rust. Blue is a dilute of Black and  Fawn is a dilute of Red.

Each parent carries genes that determine color. In the Doberman we have the Black which is dominant over red. Each parent can carry Black Only or Black and the recessive Red or Red Only. Besides these colors, each parent can also carry a dilution gene. If both parents carry the dilution gene and in the process of the mating of two parents that carry dilution, the offspring gets a dilution from the sire AND a dilution gene from the mother, then the DILUTE FORM of Black which is Blue and the dilute form of Red which is Fawn can be expressed. So it takes DILUTION from BOTH parents to have any puppies that are Blue or Fawn. This is really simple Genetics.

The Blues and Fawns also have a higher incidence of coat and skin problems. Known as color mutant alopecia. This arises from the way the MELANOCYTES  are deposited on the hair shaft itself.  These are what color the hair shaft is. It is very irregular in pattern compared to the Blacks and Reds and the hair itself is softer and has a difficult time coming through the follicle and emerging through the skin. There is a higher incidence of ingrown hairs and staph infections because of the nature of the hair shafts themselves. Both fawn and blue Dobermans suffer from a high instance of severe skin and coat problems in addition to every other prevalent genetic problem.Becasue of this Aruff Ranch does not breed Blues or Fawns. We believe in breeding only the best dogs possible and avoiding any and all health issues we can.

Black & Rust:Most people only know or readily recognize Dobermans of this color. Black base with rust points (rust on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail). It will have a black nose, and black nails.

Blue & Rust: A blue and rust is close to gray in color. It can vary from a gunmetal blue color to a very dark blue, with rust points. (rust on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail). It will have a gray eyes, gray nose, and gray nails. This is a recessive color it must be showing or carried in both parents to appear. They have a tendency to have color mutant alopecia.

Red & Rust:A red & rust can be any shade of red from medium red to a deep dark mahogany, with rust points (rust on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail). It will have a brown to light brown nose and nails. It will have brown to light brown eyes and on occasion green to hazel eyes.

Fawn & Rust: Also called Isabella and Rust is a diluted Red & Rust. It will appear to be a washed out Red & Rust. It will have gray eyes, gray nose, and gray nails. This is a recessive color it must be showing or carried in both parents to appear. They have a tendency to have color mutant alopecia. Both fawn and blue Dobermans suffer from a high instance of severe skin and coat problems in addition to every other prevalent genetic problem.Becasue of this Aruff Ranch does not breed Blues or Fawns. Albino: The "ALBINO" is White to Creamish and has pink skin, nose, blue eyes (or light yellow in a few specimens). No Rust Points.

* NOT RECCOMENDED!! We at Aruff Ranch have never bred nor do we endorse the breeding of White Albino Dobermans.

Examples of White( Albino)

In the mid 1970's, there occurred a spontaneous MUTATION in a litter sired by RASPUTIN VI and the dam DYNAMO HUMM---this was a "WHITE APPEARING" female that was eventually registered by the AKC as a "white", named PADULA'S QUEEN SHEBA.   Sheba was the first "Albino" Doberman ever registered by the AKC. Testing on Sheba's hair and test breedings with Sheba's offspring have proven that she is  "A TYROSINE POSITIVE ALBINO" and NOT WHITE at all.  She was erroneously registered by the AKC as such.

A "WHITE" dog has dark eyes, skin, nose and dark pigment.  The "ALBINO" has pink skin, nose, blue eyes (or light yellow in a few specimens).  The Albinos have "photosensitivity" to sunlight. They have problems related to sight due to this problem.  This can be reflected in temperament or insecurity problems.

The DPCA has the warning and recommendation that these Dobermans with blue eyes, pink skin, nose and pads, are "ALBINO'S" and should NOT BE BRED, and the trait not be proliferated or propagated. Albino is a "Deleterious Genetic Mutation" and carries with it many traits that are harmful and not conducive to proper Doberman temperament and health. Below is a website that carries a comprehensive grouping of information for further reading about Albino Dobermans.

Facts about Albinos

ALBINO is not a color. It is a GENETIC CONDITION that is not now, or ever has been in the past, including  back to the formational years when the breed was being developed by Louis Dobermann, something that is desirable, sought after or considered good for a Doberman guard or personal protection dog. There are breeders that seek to "make money" and "exploit" the Doberman by telling the "PUBLIC" that the Albino is "RARE" and WORTH MORE THAN NORMAL COLORED DOBERMANS. Please study the information here and on various other sites about the Albino Doberman, before you make an uninformed choice and possibly a mistake in choosing an Albino. The DPCA's position on the ALBINO is that it should not be bred, promoted or propagated and should be given Limited or No Registration.
